Cognizant Technology Solutions: Building Scalable and High-performance Enterprise Applications

Francisco D'Souza, CEO It was a fine summer day of July 1998 in Wall Street, NY when Cognizant [NASDAQ:CTSH] woke up embracing the fact that most of its revenue came from the commercial data provider and its parent company, Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). Pricked by a challenging remark from a banker on its market performance, the company fathomed that they had to plan wisely to stay ahead of competition in the Information Technology (IT) fraternity. Cognizant had two options either take the road of innovation like Microsoft or just progress financially around a customer-centric model.

After a dozen years, focused on client-centric models, Cognizant is now a premier Microsoft partner and a leading provider of IT, consulting, and business process services that add credence to its strengths on highly flexible operations, seamless global delivery culture, and deep knowledge of companies and markets. The firm’s passion is to dedicate their global technology and innovation know how, industry expertise, market intelligence, and global resources to make business stronger. Known as one of the top 10 global systems integrators within the Microsoft partner ecosystem, Cognizant also offers solutions that can improve business operations and provide tangible results on investment. Today, this heritage has provided Cognizant with a significant market advantage and is a uniquely qualified partner for several global clients. “From the beginning, we have consciously built the organization with a ‘multi-cultural’ flavor, because to serve the global marketplace, you need to be global,” says Francisco D’Souza, CEO, Cognizant.

High Quality Solutions for Global Clients

Cognizant and Microsoft are expanding their long-standing partnership to enable their mutual customers to rethink, reinvent, and rewire their organizations. The tech-stalwart has joined Microsoft’s Mainframe Migration Alliance (MMA) to help legacy customers seamlessly migrate critical data and systems to Microsoft .NET based systems. Being one of MMA’s early members, Cognizant combines technology and system integrators to move applications from aging legacy environments to the more modern and flexible Microsoft Windows Server platform and Microsoft .NET, which is reliable, scalable, and easier to administer than legacy systems.

Microsoft .NET framework helps eliminate the amount of unnecessary codes and coding processes for developers. Widely used to build scalable and high-performance enterprise applications, this framework enables developing fully functioning websites for users. According to the recent WhiteHat Security Website Stats Reports, .NET is also the most widely used languages with 28.1 percent of web applications due to its scalability, its growth in terms of ready libraries and easy to use tools.

We utilize Microsoft .NETbest practices based on its extensive application development, integration and support expertise

In order to make the lives of developers easier, Cognizant supports IT organizations seeking to redeploy legacy applications with proven methodologies and tools for modernization based on the .NET framework. The firm utilizes Microsoft .NET best practices based on its extensive application development, integration, and support expertise.

Cognizant has also developed a legacy migration modernization methodology called ImpliNET—a structured process that enables organizations to quickly move to the benefits of the Microsoft platform and .NET technology, while still running their existing businesses. ImpliNET’s four key stages— modernization analysis, modernization definition, modernization execution, and modernization go-live—are optimized for Microsoft .NET and leverage reusable frameworks, tools, and methods to streamline the modernization process.

A Milestone Moment

When Microsoft first released .NET in 2002, the programming framework was designed to make it easier for developers to craft applications tailored to run on Windows. In November 2014, Microsoft announced that it is open sourcing the entire .NET framework. As a part of the open-sourced version of .NET, Microsoft also made the framework cross platform, meaning that developers would be able to develop .NET applications that can run on either Linux or Mac operating system. This move to open source comes from “the fundamental realization of where the world is, and what application development now looks like.”

As a result of this positive outcome, Cognizant applies its expertise in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to deliver cutting-edge, collaborative online solutions. Cognizant’s SOA solutions span both .NET and J2EE-based platforms, utilizing open source tools and framework.

From cross channel optimization to managing risk and regulatory compliance, industry leaders choose Cognizant to help them work better and differently. Cognizant’s consulting and solutions offering, including the .NET expertise, help enterprises run business better and differently. With experience across all major industries, the organization creates solutions for meeting the most challenging IT problems. Cognizant combines deep technology expertise, architecture solutions capability, and program management skills to help enterprises acquire new capabilities for heterogeneous systems. Specialists across the Cognizant global delivery network work with firms to provide the skills required for streamlining, managing, and maximizing all systems, applications, and enterprise platforms including Microsoft .NET.

Achieving Mainframe Migration Benefits

Over the years, Cognizant has helped several customers plan and implement the migration of custom business solutions from a legacy mainframe to the Microsoft Windows Server environment. In an interesting case study, Schwan a major frozen food supplier was concerned about the business risk inherent in mainframe to Windows Server migration. The process was large and complex with 109 documents required to capture all the business rules, and more than 2,400 design and development deliverables. Once a program management office was established with Cognizant and Schwan resources, Cognizant’s first role in the migration was to conduct an in-depth portfolio analysis that expanded and refined its initial analysis, and identified the application sets that allowed the migration to be implemented in a series of releases. The company also conducted a pilot that validated the reengineering process it had proposed and compared the performance of .NET connected applications to their mainframe counterparts. This was an especially important step, given that Schwan was determined to see greater performance from the migrated applications.

After successful project completion, there was an estimated addition of more than $1 million to Schwan’s bottom line each year by retiring the mainframe platform, and reducing development costs and maintenance expenses. The new .NET connected applications are enhancing productivity throughout the company.

Boosting Business Effectiveness

Moving forward, Cognizant plans to invest in innovative ways to capitalize on the strategic value of the Microsoft platform. The foundation of Cognizant is in its dedication to customers and ability to exploit the power of IT. The company is keen on laying out innovative growth plans and intends to continue using its unique combination of industry process knowledge, business acumen, and Microsoft technology experience to provide customized services to clients.

While Cognizant persists on offering au courant services and solutions, Microsoft plans to continue to update its .NET framework regularly. Embracing open source as a core principle, .NET is entering a new era with several features like LINQ, ASP. NET, MCV and their Entity Framework being implemented.

Moreover, Cognizant will be working to improve its business processes by integrating several open source components as a foundation upon which one can build the entire IT landscape. While Microsoft’s goal is to minimize Application Program Interface (API) and behavioral differences by not breaking its compatibility with existing .NET applications, Cognizant has set out to proffer uninterrupted Microsoft consulting services to meet the increasing client demands.
